Safety Check List


Keep a cell phone with you at all times, see that it is always charged. If you don't have one, we will get you one. Phone lines can be cut.

If you can afford it; Get a second phone for your family and friends; leave the first one connected to an answering machine so that he will be on tape when he calls.

Get an unlisted phone number. If you can afford it get an answer machine. Never give your phone number or address out.

Make sure your name and number are not on your answering machine.

Put dead bolts on all outside doors, dowels in all sliding glass doors and if affordable, motion-detector lighting.

Get solid core doors, change locks if keys are missing, secure spare key's, get outside lights and cut low branches.

Cut back or remove anything that might hinder your seeing around the entrance to your home.

Remove any name from your mailbox or front of your house.

If affordable get an alarm system, or a loud dog.

Destroy any discarded mail, old bills, junk mail or letters - get a shredder.

Do not accept any packages unless you personally ordered them.

Vary your routes to and from work, store, etc..

Know all night stores and other public places in your area where you can go if needing help.

Find out where the nearest firehouse and police station are so you can have another safe place to go if in danger.

Keep a record of all phone calls, stalking events, and all letters or email sent. If you have a caller ID box with his number on it, call the police to come take a picture of it.

Talk to your neighbors, co-workers, and friends about the situation so they can help look out for you and call police if needed.

Get a CODE WORD that con signal to your family, friends or neighbors to call 911 for you.

Have your friends call at certain times; if he is there, you can say the word or sentence.

Always walk to your car with your keys in your hand. Immediately shut and lock the door.

Keep a note pad and pen in your home and in your car and at your work so you can always have something to write and record all incidents.

Keep important phone numbers of police, family, etc. at hand. Teach your children how to call the police.

  Have an escape route prepared. Have a place you can go after your escape, where he would not expect you to go.

Have ready and escape bag with medicine, money, important papers, telephone card, toilet-articles, some clothes. You can also put one at friends.

In case you are being chased, go to a place with lots of people and cameras.

Listen to your intuition; if things feel wrong, they probably are.

Do not expect the police to solve your problem and make it go away. You have to take 100% responsibility for dealing with the problem.

Do not respond to your stalker in any way, shape, or form.

Do not try to reason or bargain with the stalker.

Say "No" once and only once; Ignore the perpetrator.

Document phone calls, letters, incidents of entry into home, keep answering phone tape, etc..

Report the situation to the police A.S.A.P. Report every violation.

Call the police A.S.A.P. if threatened.

Make a plan of what to do if danger looms:
 1) Know law enforcement phone numbers and locations.
 2) Have a safe place.
 3) Have phone numbers of family, friends, neighbors, attorneys, etc..
 4) Keep Necessities and clothes packed in a car or at another location that you can get to fast.
 5) Reserve money, medications, S.S. Numbers and all vital information.
 6) Have a tank full of gas. Lock up keys.
 7) Have toys for children.


Tell critical people about the situations: Law enforcement, employer, family, neighbors and security personnel. Bring photos you have or give description of the person to law enforcement.

Try to have someone with you at your job, etc.. Have a co-worker to screen your calls and have another person pick up the phone to listen, if you have an extension. Do the same at home.

Get involved with local groups for support and help others.

Block your D.M.V. and voter registration or anyone can get them.

Remove name or ID from reserved parking at work.

Don't let yourself be ashamed or feel this is your fault. This is the stalker's best weapon.
